Get ready to embark on a unique shopping experience as Urban Girl Magazine presents its highly anticipated Black Business Holiday Shopping Tour in Newark for the third year in a row. Scheduled for Saturday, December 16th, this event promises to be a memorable day of supporting local black-owned businesses while exploring the vibrant community of Newark.

Urban Girl Magazine, a digital publication known for its commitment to showcasing and promoting black-owned businesses, launched the Black Business Holiday Shopping Tour in 2021 in response to the economic challenges brought on by the pandemic. The magazine’s founder, Desiree, was inspired to create the tour after witnessing the struggles faced by many local businesses during the pandemic-induced shutdowns.

Desiree shared her motivation, stating, “During the pandemic, as we all know, most non-essential businesses had to close their doors. Many of my favorite eateries couldn’t survive the financial strain. After the mandatory shutdowns were lifted, and non-essential businesses were allowed to reopen, I began highlighting black-owned businesses in Newark and throughout New Jersey on Urban Girl Magazine’s TikTok page. To my surprise, many people were unaware of the existence of these businesses. This was my way of providing them with much-needed visibility. As my videos gained hundreds of thousands of views, shares, and comments, I decided to turn this into an in-person experience.”

The success of Desiree’s initiative led to the first Black Business Holiday Shopping Tour in December 2021, followed by a second tour in July 2022. Now, the third edition of this tour promises to be a winter wonderland of shopping, dining, and community support.

In collaboration with Newark Holiday Festival, Newark Happening, Newark Alliance, Newark Gift Card, and Destination Newark, this year’s tour will focus on visiting brick-and-mortar black-owned businesses throughout Newark.
