As the world prepares to descend upon the New York-New Jersey region for the FIFA World Cup 2026™, the City of Newark is making one thing clear: the global feast begins right here. On Saturday, May 16, the Cherry Blossom Welcome Center in Essex County’s Branch Brook Park will transform into a global stage for Savor Newark, the city’s premier culinary symposium.
Running from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, this year’s edition, themed “The Culinary Cup: United at the Table,” serves as the official kickoff for Newark’s World Cup festivities. This isn’t just a food festival; it is a strategic convergence of chefs, restaurateurs, policymakers, and cultural leaders aimed at positioning Newark as “America’s Authentic Food Capital.”
A Global Stage in Branch Brook Park
For Newarkers, food has always been more than sustenance—it is a living history. From the historic Portuguese, Brazilian, and Spanish roots of the Ironbound District to the burgeoning African, Caribbean, and South American flavors in the West and South Wards, Newark’s culinary landscape is a map of global migration and resilience.
Recognized by New Jersey Travel & Tourism as one of the top five “must-attend” events in 2026, Savor Newark is the brainchild of Plusable, a Newark-based creative agency.
“We firmly believe Newark is America’s authentic food capital,” said Isabelle Coelho-Marques, CEO of Plusable. “Savor Newark is where heritage, sustainability, education, and global exchange meet. Last year, we welcomed Michelin-starred Chef Gil Fernandes from Portugal. This year, we are building even more cultural bridges.”

Michelin Stars and International Exchanges
A centerpiece of this year’s symposium is a groundbreaking student exchange agreement. In a move that bridges the gap between Newark’s youth and global excellence, two Newark students will be selected to train for six weeks under Chef Gil Fernandes at the Michelin-starred Fortaleza do Guincho in Cascais, Portugal.

The international momentum continues with this year’s headliner, Chef Nelson Soares of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Soares, the owner of the acclaimed restaurant Sult—ranked among the world’s top culinary destinations—will lead a live demonstration, bringing the vibrant flavors of Brazil to the heart of the Brick City.
Food as Economic Power
Beyond the tastings, Savor Newark is a platform for serious dialogue about Newark’s future. Panel discussions such as “Bridging Cities Through Flavor” and “Hosting the World: Food, Culture, and Newark’s Global Stage” will explore how the city can leverage the World Cup to drive long-term economic growth.
“Savor Newark is a powerful reflection of who we are as a city—bold, diverse, and deeply connected to a wider global family,” said Mayor Ras J. Baraka. “As we prepare to welcome the world for the World Cup games, this event showcases our values—unity, opportunity, and pride.”
Emily Manz, Chief Business Development Officer at Invest Newark, echoed this sentiment, noting that the Newark UEZ (Urban Enterprise Zone) is a proud supporter of the event. “Savor Newark spotlights the entrepreneurs that make our city tick,” Manz said. “Restaurant owners directly serve the community and create special experiences every day.”
